But really, what the heck is Self Care?
Lets start this topic by defining Self Care. If I could tell you what self care means to me I would say self care is; Doing what makes you happy. As moms we tend to put ourselves on the back burner, and make everything and everyone else a priority. Everything but ourselves seem to be important. That should not be the case. We need to realize with life moving as fast as it is, our self care time is important. Self care as a mom is perhaps one of the most important things you can do, because it helps improve so many things such as mental health, sleep and it also stabilizes your hormones.
Disclaimer: I want everyone to know and remember while reading this, that I truly believe self-care should be practiced in every single phase of life. When I was in college and living on my own was probably the perfect time to really get those habits into place, although I did not do that back then, it is not too late to start these habits now at this stage in my life. If that’s where your life is, or if you’re in a completely different place, I’m just thrilled you’re here so that I can help throw a little inspiration your way.
Here are 3 ways to show self-care for yourself
1. Ignore the Chores and find a good book to read
The chores tend to pile up, but you know what? They will still be there when you are done. Ignore the chores for a day or even just for a few hours, and indulge into a good read instead. Reading has become a family affair in our home. I have instilled that same love for reading in my children and even my non-reader husband is always in the middle of an audiobook. Could reading be something I pick up again to give me that same feeling of peace it always did before? It’s no secret that reading a book is one of the best ways to turn on the escape factor, but I also love that it allows me to travel without leaving home. It gives me something else to think about, and helps me work out things going on in my own life through someone else’s story.
2. Pamper yourself
This category is probably the first thing that comes to most peoples minds when they hear self-care, but it is so good to have in your life when you are a busy mom. I have self proclaimed Sunday as Self Care Sunday all this year and I love it so much. Sundays seem to have a bad reputation in our society. It’s the end of the long awaited weekend, and signals the start of yet another Monday. So I decided to take back Sunday evenings! After I put my kids to bed, I turn my Sunday night into a weekly pampering session. Believe it or not, Sunday is now one of my favorite days now that I know how to pamper myself! Here are some of the things I have included in my Self Care Sunday.
- Aromatherapy Baths
- Giving myself a mani and pedi
- Giving myself a facial
- Sit outside. Whether it’s to watch a sunrise, a sunset or just to breather in a sense of freshness
- Do your hair and makeup just because
3. Go out by yourself
As a mom of 2 little ones I can’t remember the last time I went to the mall by myself just to window shop or to buy those underwear that make me feel sexy. I am a firm believer that just alone time with yourself, doing something you love is so relaxing. Us moms, most of the time, have to shop with little ones attached to us. The first time I got away and shopped for myself (by myself) it was so peaceful and relaxing. I knew that I needed to incorporate this in my life on the regular, and I’m so happy I did. Also, I wanted to let you all know that taking care of yourself isn’t selfish, it is vital. You can’t give your best to your children if you aren’t at your best. Going out by yourself doesn’t just have to be the mall it can consist of many things. Here are a few other places you can go out by yourself:
- Grocery Shop alone
- Girls Night Out
- Go get your nails or hair done
- Go for a nice walk alone
- Date night with the hubby
Remember, you can’t create your best Mom life without taking care of yourself from time to time. Self Care is good physically, mentally and spiritually. Take it back to basics and look at what makes you feel good. That’s what self-care is all about! Just making you feel good about yourself and the world around you. When you’re happy and healthy, you’re able to spread that happiness far more easily to others. I hope this post inspires you to take some time to yourself in the mist of being a busy mom!
You matter too girl!!
Much Love Kenice
